Charity Fraud

Unfortunately, there is a risk of fraud being committed to charities. In October we saw Charity Fraud Awareness week (#charityfraudout), an initiative designed to help educate and remind charities and trustees about the risk, to be aware of threats and implement any required safeguards.

In August an alert to the charity sector was issued by the Charity Commission warning of the types of fraud risks.

Insider fraud

Fraud committed by somebody involved in the charity – trustee, employee, volunteer.

Cyber Fraud

Fraud committee online – hacking into banking, fake emails, fake invoices.

Last year over 50% of organisations suffered an insider threat attack and 90% of businesses felt vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

There are other types of fraud which charities should be aware of:

  • Donation fraud
  • Due diligence and partnership working (including grants) and;
  • Moving money safely.

At 360, we have recently attended fraud awareness and prevention training so if you would like to discuss the impact or threat of fraud on your organisation, please get in touch by calling 01482 427360 or email help@360accountants.co.uk.
